Eastwoods Park was the site of Wheeler’s Grove, a traditional spot for Austin’s African American community to celebrate Juneteenth every year. When it officially opened in 1930, Eastwoods was one of Austin’s first public parks, and it became the original location of Eeyore’s Birthday Party in 1964. The park’s distinguished history has been recognized with a Lone Star Legacy award and Juneteenth historical interpretation signage, both installed in 2021. The city parks department is hosting a joint ceremony for the community to dedicate and celebrate the plaques as well as the history behind them. Saturday, June 11, at 11 a.m., Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave.
