Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, announced in a press release Monday that it has purchased a controlling interest in the Roserock solar project, which Austin Energy contracted with solar developer Recurrent Energy to construct in May 2014. The 157.5 megawatt West Texas solar project is under construction as of early November – although construction began on a substation in late September – and is expected to go online in late 2016. A Recurrent press release points out that the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the electric grid and market for most of the state, projects that there will be at least 13 gigawatts of solar energy installed across Texas by 2030. Austin Energy, which also has a 30-MW contract for a solar farm in Webberville, announced in October that it recently signed two new solar contracts that total 288 MW.
