Two top Travis County officials are encouraging tens of thousands of residents to take advantage of President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration policy. County Judge Sarah Eckhardt and Commissioner Margaret Gómez each star in separate public service announcement videos that were released on Monday, both gently imploring residents to start figuring out if they are eligible for programs that could forestall deportation. While a federal judge has temporarily blocked the president’s orders from taking effect, Eckhardt notes that it could take “many months” to gather the necessary documents to prove eligibility. “As many as 37,000 Travis County residents are likely eligible to apply for this program, and we want to make sure that we have done everything to help our residents take advantage of this opportunity,” Eckhardt says in the video before urging residents to call 211 for assistance.
