Thanks to a Feb. 14 cockfighting bust in Webberville, the Austin Animal Center has added 26 roosters to its roster of animals needing safe, loving homes. The Valentine’s Day rooster rescue, led by Travis County sheriff’s deputies, was not without casualties. When deputies arrived on the scene, 16 birds had already died, and three later had to be euthanized due to their injuries. According to an announcement from the Austin Animal Center, seven of the birds are still being treated for injuries, and Animal Services is currently reaching out to “organizations with experience rehabilitating fighting roosters” to ensure that all of the birds get proper care. The center does report, however, that the roosters “are docile and friendly around people,” and the ultimate goal, according to Deputy Chief Animal Services Officer Kristen Auerbach, is “to find good placements for all these beautiful birds.” Organizations interested in helping place the roosters should call 512-978-0507 or email kristen.auerbach@austintexas.gov.
