The Austin Independent School District announced that it will hold two meetings to gather community input about potentially building a new facility in the Mueller area. The meetings, christened “Imagine Northeast Austin,” will take place on Feb. 20, 8 to 10 a.m., at Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy (6401 N. Hampton Drive) and on March 3, 5 to 7 p.m., at the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex (1156 Hargrave St.). Staff said the meetings will center around the type of facility to potentially build on the site, the possible grades to include in the new school and future partnerships for the facility. In 2000, AISD trustees were gifted the 10-acre site within the Mueller development, a mixed-use housing development situated at the site of the city’s old airport. The project, which was a joint effort between the city of Austin and Catellus Development Corp., will expand the site to 20 acres if the district decides to include mixed-use developments. In October, AISD board members analyzed the possibility of building a new school on the site. However, some trustees pointed out that the area’s surrounding schools are underenrolled. If unable to attend a meeting, residents can submit comments online.
