The Travis County Commissioners Court approved on Tuesday the creation of a task force to explore the expansion of benefits freshly extended to construction workers working in public improvement districts, or PIDs. Dubbed, rather unlyrically, the Task Force on PID-Related Construction Wages, Training and Working Conditions, the body will explore ways to encourage private builders within PIDs to provide workers higher wages, better training and more protective monitoring. Those standards already cover workers who build the eponymous public improvements in PIDs – things like roads, green space or community centers. However, workers building private projects in PIDs, namely residential or commercial buildings, aren’t yet guaranteed the same benefits. The task force’s eight-person roster will include four members each from both the development industry and the labor-and-community-advocacy sector.
