Some of Austin’s most contaminated land may soon be rehabilitated, thanks to an $820,000 grant awarded to the city by the Environmental Protection Agency. The funds will be dispersed as loans with “very favorable and flexible” terms, according to a press release from Austin Resource Recovery, and they will be available to development or redevelopment projects that “provide a public benefit.” Much of the funding, which will be administered by the Brownfields Revitalization Office, is anticipated to support projects in East Austin, where a significant number of Austin’s contaminated sites are located. According to ARR, the EPA grant allows the city “to provide loans that most banks would not and to provide gap funding until the cleanup is over.” More information about the program and the loan application process can be found here.
