Described as “a 23-year-old University of Texas-Austin business school graduate, life-long resident of Northwest Austin, real estate analyst, and veteran martial arts instructor,” Nick Virden – following through on a promise from last week – made his candidacy for City Council official on Wednesday with a press release on his Facebook page. According to the press release, the former Texas Capitol intern plans to center his platform around multimodal transportation (advocating for “cost-effective transportation solutions from a competitive marketplace while ensuring that the city is a steward of its existing infrastructure and transportation obligations”), affordability (“we need to look to contracting out non-essential functions so that our police, for example, can focus on policing while contractors do the paper-pushing”) and technological innovation (“If we want to continue building our reputation as the Silicon Hills, we do that by keeping regulatory burdens low”). Virden will be running against City Council Member Sheri Gallo for her Northwest Austin District 10 seat. Alison Alter, formerly of the Parks and Recreation Board, is also running for Gallo’s seat.
