The city of Austin’s CityWorks Academy kicks off its eighth year this week. As the name suggests, the program is designed to teach participants how the city works. Through 12 weeks of evening instruction, students get a close look at every major city department – “the A to Z of City operations, from aviation to zoning,” as described in a press release from the city. According to the press release, this year’s class has 28 participants, selected from a pool of 100 applicants. “The success of the Academy is evident by the continued involvement of previous participants,” said Chief Communications Director Doug Matthews. “Graduates are serving on City boards and advisory groups and recommending the program to their friends.” For a glimpse of the new crop of potential future board and advisory group members, see the complete list of this year’s participants here.
