Life just got a little easier for beer-drinking, Snarf-sandwich-loving denizens of South First Street near Elizabeth Street, because the Snarf’s Sandwiches establishment at 1404 South First St. will now be allowed to sell alcohol, even though it is close to the Texas School for the Deaf. Mayor Pro Tem Kathie Tovo expressed regret over an earlier alcohol waiver granted despite its proximity to the entrance of the school, but she said she understood that this establishment was farther away from it – with the closest access point being a service driveway over 700 feet away. “For me, this is a different matter,” she said. “It is farther away and seems to me to represent a very different kind of case.” The waiver was approved in a vote of 8-1 on Nov. 3, with City Council Member Delia Garza voting in opposition and Council members Ellen Troxclair and Sheri Gallo absent for the vote.
