The Travis County Commissioners Court on Tuesday established guiding principles for setting up a groundwater conservation district in Southwest Travis County, and the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District board of directors is considering supporting those principles, according to an announcement from the district. The idea is to help stakeholders – including the county, state legislators and other groundwater conservation districts – coordinate management of groundwater use in the area. Southwest Travis County, which has no groundwater conservation district now, has long been identified by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as a priority area for groundwater management, according to BSEACD. “Responsible groundwater management in southwest Travis County will help our District also,” said BSEACD General Manager John Dupnik. “We are downstream, hydrogeologically speaking.”
