Outdoor learning centers, rain gardens, bike programs and a honey bee apiary are just some of the 29 projects soon to materialize at Austin elementary, middle and high schools thanks to grant money from the city. The funds have been awarded through the Bright Green Future grant program, which is sponsored by the Office of Sustainability along with Austin Resource Recovery and the Watershed Protection, Public Works and Transportation departments. According to an announcement from the city, the program – which launched in 2012 – “was designed to recognize and support innovative projects that will inspire students to become lifelong environmental stewards.” A list of this year’s projects and grant recipients is available here. Information on past projects is available here.
