The city’s Parks and Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony last weekend for the redesigned stream bed in Zilker’s Isamu Taniguchi Japanese Garden. The original stream bed deteriorated since its creation nearly 50 years ago and was losing water to both leaks and evaporation. The grandson of the garden’s namesake, architect Evan Taniguchi, worked with an environmental consultant to revamp the stream in a sustainable way. To achieve that goal, the stream will be fed from a water collection system on the roof of the garden center. They’ve added vegetation for oxygen and to keep the water clean naturally. There’s also 100 species of native plants lining the new bed. The city was able to complete the project through a $50,000 donation from JetBlue.
