Just what’s in your backyard soil? Local gardeners can find out next month at the city’s free Soil Kitchen, where experts from the city’s Brownfields Office will collect samples that they will later screen for heavy metals and nutrients. The results will reveal how effective the soil in question will be at growing vegetables. From April 8-9, the Brownfields reps will accept labeled (with cross streets of the garden, plus the owner’s initials) soil samples. Participating gardeners will be assigned an ID number, which they’ll use to find the results when they’re posted in the middle of May. Soil Kitchen runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, and from 9 a.m.-noon on Sunday, April 9. Find a complete rundown of the instructions on the city’s website.
