10. Consider and take appropriate action on adoption of the Travis County Juvenile Probation Master Plan. (Judge Eckhardt)
Monitor’s Take: After a year in the planning oven, the proposed long-term vision for the county’s South Campus near South Congress and Oltorf is ready for Commissioners Court approval (or disapproval). The draft plan tops 100 pages and lays out a vision of expanding the Gardner-Betts Juvenile Justice Center by replacing a parking lot and drive-thru bank across the street from the facility.
11. Consider and take appropriate action on staff recommendations and update on Public Improvement District policy amendment proposals. (Commissioner Gómez)
Monitor’s Take: The county’s travails with its PID policy has proven to be the gift that keeps giving for freelance journalists. After a tortuous path to its initial approval last year to its first practical applications, the issue has been reliably recurrent. Now the court is looking to tweak the policy and will hear updates on efforts to expand worker protections as well as include specific affordable housing goals.
13. Consider and take appropriate action on the acceptance of a donation given to support the Travis County Veterans Court Program. (Commissioner Gómez)
Monitor’s Take: It’s small in scale but large in generosity. After Gov. Greg Abbott kiboshed more than $1 million in funding for several county justice programs over Sheriff Sally Hernandez’s decision to reduce cooperation with federal immigration officials, county resident Victor Summer has stepped forward with a $200 donation towards the Veterans Court Program. Every drop will do.
21. Authorize Purchasing Agent to commence negotiations with the highest-ranked firm for Request for Qualifications (RFQ) No. Q1701-005-KR, Historic Structures Report for the Travis County Palm School Building. (Judge Eckhardt)
Monitor’s Take: Another step in the long journey to figure out the fate of Palm School, currently home to the county’s Health and Human Services Department at I-35 and Cesar Chavez St. County staff have winnowed the list of potential partners to assess the structure of the building to just one: local outfit Antenora Architects LLP.
