Braving the rain outside Austin Independent School District’s Sept. 25 board of trustees meeting, Save East Austin Schools held a press conference protesting the 2017 school bond. Speakers accused the AISD board and district of racism and perpetuating inequality through the bond by singling out schools east of I-35 for consolidation. Because of this inequity, the group is calling for all Austinites to vote against the bond in November. Alfredo Herrera, an alumni of Metz Elementary and Martin Middle School, said that when he was a student at Metz he painted on a few of the bricks that were used on the campus. “They promised me that (those bricks) would stay there for the rest of my life, so my grandkids could go up and see what I drew on that school. Now they’re telling me that they’re going to take that down? I’m not going to allow that,” he said. “(Those are) our bricks, and that’s my property.”
