Mayor Steve Adler and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio are among those who have been accused of illegally crossing the Mexican border near Tornillo on June 21 when they went to try to inspect a holding facility federal immigration officials have been using to detain immigrant children. Various news organizations, including the Associated Press, reported that U.S. Customs and Border Protection made allegations that the mayors crossed the border on foot and then crossed back into the United States illegally. Adler told the Austin Monitor on Wednesday, “We weren’t detained, which seems to be the question that folks are mostly asking. I wish the border agents were devoting all this effort to returning children to their families as the courts have required. If this is an attempt to intimidate or silence such calls, it won’t work.”
