Guest speaker Karen Chapple will discuss affordable housing at the upcoming installment of the Imagine Austin Speaker Series, according to an announcement from the city. Chapple is a city and regional planning professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where she co-founded the Urban Displacement Project. She is also author of the book Planning Sustainable Cities and Regions: Towards More Equitable Development. According to the city, “Chapple has researched ways to minimize displacement by constructing both market-rate and subsidized housing, as well as aggressively preserving affordable units and protecting tenants’ rights. More specifically, her research has found that for each subsidized housing unit, two or more market-rate units need to be built to similarly reduce displacement pressures.” Her talk is scheduled for Wednesday, July 18, 7-8:30 p.m., at the Town Lake Center Building, 721 Barton Springs Road, Room 130.
