The Austin Animal Center’s July numbers are in and they’re good – the best the shelter has ever seen, in fact. Last week, Lee Ann Shenefiel, interim chief animal services officer, announced in a memo to the mayor and City Council that the shelter “was able to reach a live outcome rate of 99 percent for both dogs and cats.” Broken down further, the numbers show a 99.5 percent live outcome rate for dogs and a 99 percent live outcome rate for cats. The memo credits the dedicated involvement of the ASO’s staff, volunteers, and partners, along with the support from the community and city leadership, for making the milestone possible. The achievement also highlights an impressive recovery from a dip in live outcomes in the spring. Austin Animal Center is the largest no-kill shelter in the country.
