Low-income women in Travis County may now receive pregnancy testing at no cost at Central Health-funded CommUnityCare. Women who opt for pregnancy testing will be screened to determine their health insurance options and will also receive free family planning counseling, prenatal care information or abortion referrals. “We want to make sure every woman has access to the best health care, regardless of their economic situation or ZIP code,” Dr. Abigail Aiken, a Central Health board member and assistant professor of the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT Austin, said in a news release. “Often pregnancy testing is the first entry point into the health care system for women and newborn babies,” Aiken continued. “If we can make care accessible, and make sure pregnant women have a health care coverage program, hopefully, more women will be able to stay in the system throughout their pregnancy and postpartum.” For free pregnancy tests, call (512) 978-8268 or visit CommUnityCare North Central, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., 1210 W. Braker Lane. No appointment is necessary.
