In light of dry weather and dangerous winds, the Travis County Commissioners Court has voted to issue a burn ban for the unincorporated areas of the county, effective now through April 8. “We’re experiencing strong wind gusts, decreasing humidity, and dry vegetation conditions that create a critical wildfire threat,” Travis County Chief Fire Marshal Gary Howell said in a statement to the press. “High winds and dry fuels make it easy for wildfires to ignite and spread rapidly. I urge everyone in Travis County to follow the burn ban, so we can work together to reduce wildfire risk and keep our community safe.” In accordance with guidelines established by Howell’s office, the ban does not apply to supervised prescribed burns or outdoor welding, cutting or grinding operations. As for grills – the fire marshal urges caution and recommends residents have water nearby to put out any unintended fires. All residents should call 911 immediately to report any fires that have gotten out of control.
