After a long history of covering City Hall, Travis County and the like, the Austin Monitor stopped publishing in October 2025 to pursue a new project: Austin Current. For the foreseeable future, the Monitor will live on as a searchable archive, open to anyone who needs it. We invite our longtime readers and casual fans to join us over at Austin Current to experience our evolution firsthand.

What’s happening to the Austin Monitor?

After more than a decade operating as a hyperlocal, independent nonprofit newsroom, the Austin Monitor was acquired by the Texas Tribune in May 2025. And so, the Austin Current was born. You can now follow along on Austin Current’s journey and plan on getting more in-depth, expansive local news from the Current moving forward.

Will I still have access to the Monitor archives?

Absolutely

What is the Austin Current?

The Austin Current is Austin’s newest nonprofit local newsroom, powered by the Texas Tribune. You can visit the site here and sign up for our newsletter to stay abreast of our progress and, of course, the news.

Who is the Austin Current?

The Austin Current is led by editor-in-chief Melissa Barragán Taboada and former Austin Monitor CEO Joel Gross. Longtime Monitor editor Liz Pagano is the newsroom’s editor and Chase Karacostas is head of community engagement and events. We are in the process of hiring reporting staff, so stay tuned on that front!
